Family Visa

To live with your family for more than 6 months, you need a family visa. Your family can be your:

  • spouse or partner
  • fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • child
  • parent
  • relative who’ll provide long-term care for you


You cannot get a family visa if

  • Your family member has a work visa or student visa

  • You have a visitor visa or a visa for 6 months or less


Spouse or Partner Visa

You can apply for a Spouse or Partner Visa to join your partner in the UK, both you and your partner need to be 18 or over.

To be eligible, your partner needs to be one of the following:

  • be a British or Irish citizen
  • have settled in the UK
  • have pre-settle status
  • have protection status

  • have a Turkish Businessperson visa or Turkish Worker visa


You must meet one of the following and provide corresponding documentations:

  • in a civil partnership or marriage that’s recognised in the UK

  • been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply

  • you are a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner and will marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arriving


You must also meet the following requirements:

  • You must pass at least level A1 on the CEFR scale for your first visa application, or A2 if you are extending your visa
  • You and your partner must have a combined income of at least £18,600 a year


Child Visa

You can apply for a Child Visa to join your parent in the UK.


To apply as a child, the following requirements must be met:

  • not be married as well as in a civil partnership or living an independent life

  • you should be financially supported, including accommodation and maintenance, without claiming any public funds

  • you are under 18 on the date of application

  • your relationship with your parent should be able to be proven


Parent Visa

This visa allows you to stay in the UK for 2 years and 9 months, you will need to apply to extend your stay after this.

To apply as a parent to care for your child, the following requirements must be met:

  • your child must either be under 18 on the date you apply; or have been under 18 when you were first granted leave and not live an independent life (e.g. they've left home, got married)
  • your child must be living in the UK
  • your child must be a British or Irish citizen, settled in the UK, from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and have pre-settled status or have been living in the UK continuously for at least 7 years
  • you need to have sole or shared parental responsibility for your child
  • If you share parental responsibility, the child’s other parent must not be your partner.

  • You must pass at least level A1 on the CEFR scale for your first visa application, or A2 if you are extending your visa

  • you must show you can financially support yourself and any dependents during your time in the UK without needing public funds.
